Aikido students practicing iriminage

Boston Aikikai offers aikido classes every day. Please refer to the calendar for the week’s schedule and to book a class.

Classes begin with stretching and warm-up, followed by the practice of aikido techniques with partners, under the guidance of the instructor.

During the training, one begins to notice and appreciate how the techniques build on each other, and share common concepts and movements. Class is taught by a USAF (United States Aikido Federation) certified instructor, and students will pair off with fellow students to practice most techniques. The dojo is a friendly environment in which to begin or continue training, as personal limits, boundaries, and injuries are always respected.

Basics classes

Basics classes emphasize the fundamentals of aikido and are appropriate for all levels – both for beginners and for more experienced students. The instructor explains and demonstrates proper posture, position, and ukemi (receiving and falling from technique). Time is spent on the most common techniques in aikido, which beginners need to learn and more advanced students must constantly improve.

Regular classes

Regular, or mixed classes, are open for all students, from those just starting to more advanced practitioners. Unlike basics classes, regular classes include fewer verbal explanations from the instructor and more diverse techniques.

If interested in aikido, please contact us. For a first class, wear comfortable clothes, sign the waiver, and arrive a good 15 minutes before the class to familiarize yourself with the dojo.
