Youth classes at Boston Aikikai are open to children ages 5 to 15. All are welcome, and no previous martial arts or athletic experience is necessary.
Aikido is a traditional Japanese martial art that emphasizes effective self defense without aggression. Instead of meeting force with force, students learn to move to a safe position and redirect the momentum of an attack into a throw or pin. Ultimately, the attacker is defeated by the force of their own attack. Aikido is especially well suited for children because it doesn’t depend on size or strength: with practice, a smaller person can neutralize an attack from a much larger and stronger opponent.
Classes are 45 minutes in length on Wednesday evenings at 5:15 and Saturday mornings at 10. Prospective students are welcome to come watch a class or try a free trial class.
